DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. --- Former Texas A&M golf standout Julia Boland advanced to the second step on her quest to earn her LPGA Tour membership with a strong effort at the LPGA Qualifying Tournament at the LPGA International.
Boland, from Tamworth, New South Wales, Australia, easily advanced to the second stage of the LPGA qualifying process by tying for sixth at the tournament (top 50 individuals advanced). Boland finished the 72 holes at 10-under with rounds of 68-72-70-68. 2011 senior Sarah Zwartynski also played in the tournament, but missed the cut after shooting rounds of 75-77.
"I feel like I played very solid and steady," Boland said. "It's a weird tournament because you just have to finish top 50 to progress to the second stage, but by finishing sixth I feel like I proved to myself that I am ready for the pros."
Boland will now play at the Qualifying Tournament Stage II on Sept. 27-30 at the Plantation Golf Club in Venice, Fla. The top 70 finishers from Stage II will advance to the Stage III, and all other players will receive LPGA Futures Tour status (based on finish) for the 2012 season.
Boland played one season for the Aggies in 2009-10 and helped A&M to the 2010 Big 12 Championship and an 11th place finish at the NCAA Championships.
