Four Aggies to Compete in U.S. Amateur

Four members of the Texas A&M men's golf team will tee it up next week at the 111th U.S. Amateur Championship, beginning Monday outside Milwaukee.

ERIN, Wis.—Four members of the Texas A&M men's golf team will tee it up next week at the 111th U.S. Amateur Championship, beginning Monday outside Milwaukee.

Representing the Aggies will be senior All-American Jordan Russell (College Station), junior Drew Evans (Dallas), sophomore Jade Scott (Daingerfield) and incoming freshman Tyler Dunlap (Westlake).

“Having four players in the U.S. Am is a quite an accomplishment and hopefully a good omen for our upcoming season,” Aggie head coach J.T. Higgins said. “We knew Jordan was in because of his World Ranking but to have three young men qualify that have yet to hit a shot for our team is really encouraging.  I think this speaks volumes to the depth of our team and I am excited to see how they perform.  All of our boys have been playing pretty well this summer and hopefully it culminates with a good showing up in Wisconsin.”

The Amateur, which runs through Sunday, Aug. 28, will utilize two courses for stroke play—Erin Hills (7,760 yards, par 72) and Blue Mound (6,622 yards, par 70) Golf and Country Clubs. The field of 312 golfers will compete in two rounds of stroke play, then will be cut to the low 64 scorers for match play beginning Wednesday morning. A 36-hole, match-play final is scheduled for Sunday, Aug. 28.

Fans can follow the action by logging on to usga.org and clicking on the U.S. Amateur link on the right side of the page. In addition, The Golf Channel will carry action on Aug. 24 (2-4 p.m. CT), Aug. 25 (12-2 p.m. CT) and Aug. 26 (12-2 p.m. CT) while NBC will air the final two days (Aug. 27 and 28) from 3-5 p.m. CT each afternoon.

The U.S. Amateur Championship is the oldest golf championship in the country, one day older than the U.S. Open. Throughout its history, the U.S. Amateur has been the most coveted of all amateur titles. Many of the great names of professional golf, such as Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Lanny Wadkins, Craig Stadler, Jerry Pate, Mark O'Meara, Hal Sutton, Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods, grace the Havemeyer Trophy.
