Russell to face Bobby Leopold in Friday's round of 16

ERIN, Wis.—Texas A&M senior All-American Jordan Russell took the lead on the first hole and never looked back, cruising to a 5 and 3 victory over Bryson Dechambeau in the second round of the U.S. Amateur Championship Thursday afternoon at Erin Hills Golf and Country Club outside Milwaukee.

The victory moves Russell into the “Sweet 16” against 26-year-old Bobby Leopold (Cranston, R.I.). The pair will face off on Friday morning at 7:30 a.m. (CT) with a berth in the quarterfinals at stake. The round of 8 is scheduled for later Friday, with the semifinals on Saturday and the championship on Sunday.

Russell (College Station) birdied the first two holes to go 2-up in the match, picked up another hole with a birdie on 11 to go 3-up, then posted back-to-back birds on Nos. 14 and 15 to close out the win.

The other Aggie in the match-play field, sophomore Jade Scott (Daingerfield), posted a spirited battle against one of the top juniors in the game--Jordan Spieth--before falling, 2 and 1. The pair were all-square making the turn before Spieth picked up holes 10, 12 and 13 to go 3-up with five to play. Scott carded one of his four birdies on the day on the par-4 15th to pull within two holes, but each player made par on Nos. 16 and 17 to close out the match.

Fans can follow Russell in the U.S. Amateur with live scoring on usga.org. In addition, The Golf Channel will carry live coverage of the quarterfinals on Friday afternoon from 12-2 p.m. (CT).
