ERIN, Wis.—Texas A&M senior All-American Jordan Russell rallied from behind to defeat Bobby Leopold on the 19th hole and advance to the quarterfinals Friday morning of the 2011 U.S. Amateur Championship at Erin Hills Golf Club outside Milwaukee.
Russell (College Station) advances to face Oklahoma State All-American and defending U.S. Amateur champion Peter Uihlein in the quarterfinal round later this afternoon. The match is scheduled to begin at 1:15 p.m. Uihlein defeated 2010 NCAA Champion Scott Langley of Illinois, 2 and 1, earlier Friday.
Russell becomes the first A&M player to advance this deep in the U.S. Amateur in at least a decade, and did so in thrilling fashion. Leopold rallied to take the lead in the match by winning holes 9, 10, 11 and 12 and grab a one-hole lead heading down the stretch. The pair matched scores on holes 13-17 before Russell birdied the 18th and final hole to square up the match and force extras.
As the duo went back to the first tee, the Aggie senior recorded a 5 on the 563-yard, par-5 1st hole. Leopold bogeyed the hole, icing the victory for Russell.
Russell and Uihlein met several times during the 2010-11 season, with the Aggie defeating the Cowboy at the Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters in March in Las Vegas, and the Big 12 Championship in Kansas in April.
