Jerod-Eddie Earns Big 12 Defender of Week Honor

A three-sack performance by Texas A&M's Tony Jerod-Eddie against SMU earned the senior the first Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week honor of his career on Tuesday.

A three-sack performance by Texas A&M's Tony Jerod-Eddie against SMU earned the senior the first Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week honor of his career on Tuesday.

Jerod-Eddie became the first Aggie to notch a three-sack game since former DeSoto High School teammate and Denver Broncos rookie Von Miller posted a trio of sacks against Utah State in 2009. Miller went on to lead the nation with 17 QB sacks that season. Miller was in College Station over the weekend and was signing autographs in the Aggie Fan Zone prior to the game.

"It was real special for (Von) to be out here supporting us,” Jerod-Eddie said. “We had a great scheme against (SMU's) pass protection. Coach (Tim) DeRuyter dialed up the plays, the outside linebackers did a great job threatening and I came free and made the tackles I had to make. I just try to take it one play at a time and do the best I can on that play."

Jerod-Eddie had a huge all-around game while helping the Aggies open 2011 with a resounding 46-14 win over Conference USA power SMU on Sunday. In addition to his three sacks, Jerod-Eddie finished second on the team with six total tackles and turned in a pair of QB hurries.

Jerod-Eddie said the Sunday's big crowd of 86,951, the largest season-opening attendance in school history, helped inspire him and his Aggie teammates.

“We have the greatest fans period here at A&M,” Jerod-Eddie said. “It's easy when you've got all those people standing the whole game, chanting and yelling for you. It was easy to get fired up and want to do big things."
