Furthermore, both Urbina and Sanchez-Quintanar were named two of the top four alternates in the main draw of the prestigious Riviera/ITA All-American in October, the ITA also announced today. They will begin play in the qualifying round if they are not selected to move up. In addition, Urbina and Sanchez-Quintanar will team together in doubles at the ITA All-American, starting out in the qualifying bracket.
Urbina, a two-time All-Big 12 Conference selection in singles and listed No. 809 in the world rankings, played No. 1 singles for the Aggies in 2011 and received a second consecutive at-large berth to the NCAA Singles Championship. She was as high as No. 11 in the ITA rankings midway through the spring and finished the year ranked No. 29 after going 28-10 (.737) overall, including 16-8 against ranked opponents.
This past summer, Urbina won the Mercury Insurance Open Opportunity Tournament singles title and received a wildcard entry into the 2011 Mercury Insurance Open. She also represented Mexico at the World University Games in Shenzhen, China, and won a bronze medal in doubles.
From Campo de Criptana, Spain, Sanchez-Quintanar began her career with the Terps last January and opened with 14 consecutive singles victories. She posted a 17-5 record overall in the spring, including a 10-4 record at the No. 1 singles line and was named the 2011 ITA Atlantic Region Player to Watch. She became the first Maryland tennis player to advance to the NCAA round of 32 with her 6-3, 6-4 first-round victory over Urbina at the 2011 NCAA Singles Championships.
Sanchez-Quintanar finished the season ranked 34th in the nation in singles by the ITA after leading Maryland to a 13-10 record and a No. 34 final team ranking.
In doubles, Sanchez-Quintanar teamed with Jordaan Sanford for most of 2011 and opened the spring with 13 consecutive wins. The duo would later knock off the nation's top-ranked doubles team at the time, Josipa Bek and Keri Wong of Clemson, 8-5, on April 3. The Terps pair finished the spring 18-4 in dual matches at the No. 1 line and earned a berth in the NCAA Doubles Championships. Sanchez-Quintanar and Sanford fell in three sets to 12th-ranked Linda Abu Meshrefova and Nida Hamilton of Northwestern in the first round and were No. 26 in the final ITA doubles ranking.
Urbina, Sanchez-Quintanar and the rest of the Aggies open the fall season Sept. 16-18 with part of the squad participating in the Midland Invitational in Midland, Texas, and the others competing in the Duke Invitational in Durham, N.C.
