COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Texas A&M softball head coach Jo Evans and the Aggie softball team started fall practice yesterday at the Aggie Softball Complex.
"Our players worked very hard in the offseason to be ready for this fall season," Evans said. "I'm excited about the level of talent on our team and it feels great to be back on the field again."
The team is preparing for a competitive fall schedule that includes a doubleheader against the USA Women's National Team and four home contests against in-state opponents. The exhibition season will end with the annual best-of-five Maroon & White Series.
The Aggies finished the 2011 season strong, with a trip to the NCAA Super Regional for the fourth time in program history. The team was undefeated at home, the longest home streak in A&M softball history, and posted a 44-15 overall record.
This season the team returns eight starters and 13 letterwinners from the 2011 squad, while welcoming six newcomers. Returning starters include 2011 NFCA All-American pitcher Mel Dumezich, 2011 All-Region selection and Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year Natalie Villarreal and 2010 All-American catcher Meagan May.
The Aggies' kick off the fall season at home against Blinn College on Sept. 27. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. at the Aggie Softball Complex. Admission to all fall contests is free to the public. To learn more about A&M softball, log on to AggieAthletics.com.
