COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Texas A&M soccer players Chelsea Jones and Annie Kunz were named Big 12 Players of the Week, the conference office announced today.
Jones, a junior midfielder, was named the Big 12's Offensive Player of the Week, while Kunz, a freshman forward earned Big 12 Newcomer of the Week honors.
"It's nice to see our players' great performances acknowledged," head coach G Guerrieri said. "Chelsea and Annie had great weekends and were instrumental in helping us start our Big 12 campaign off with a win."
From Belton, Texas, Jones netted two goals last weekend, including the game winner against Baylor with less than two minutes left in the Aggies' conference opener at Ellis Field on Friday. Jones also scored the game-winning goal on Sunday in the 13-1 victory over Fordham, while adding two assists. This is the first honor for the junior who is posting personal bests this season in goals (3), assists (3) and points (9), and has started in a career-high nine games thus far.
A Golden, Colo., native, Kunz was also named to the TopDrawerSoccer.com Team of the Week this week after recording her second hat trick of the season and her career in the defeat of Fordham on Sunday. The freshman also helped the Aggies to a 2-1 conference victory over Baylor, scoring the first goal of the match. Kunz added two assists to her team-and-conference-leading offensive statistics against Fordham. This is the second consecutive Player-of-the-Week honor for the forward, who leads the Big 12 in points (21), points per game (2.10), goals (9) and goals per game (0.90).
The Aggies (6-4, 1-0 Big 12) had an all-around successful week, leaving the conference's only game of the weekend with a victory and breaking two program records. A&M's 13 goals and 16 assists on Sunday were team single-game highs.
This weekend the Aggies continue Big 12 play at home against Iowa State on Friday. The match is set for a 6:30 p.m. kickoff at Ellis Field. Sunday will feature another home contest for A&M, against Loyola-Chicago at 1:30 p.m. To learn more about Texas A&M soccer, log on to AggieAthletics.com.
