Equestrian Opens Season in Delaware

A&M to face Delaware State, Fresno State in weekend shows

DOVER, Del.--The nine-time national champion Texas A&M equestrian team opens its season this weekend when the Aggies travel to the east coast for a pair of shows.

A&M will open the year by facing host Delaware State on Friday at 3 p.m. (CT) and then battle Fresno State on Saturday at 8 a.m. (CT). Both shows will take place at the Gambler's Choice Equestrian Center in Dover.

"We're all really looking forward to kicking off the season this weekend," head coach Tana McKay said. "It's never easy to win on the road, but we're excited about the challenge and are eager to see all our hard work during the offseason pay off."

The Aggies bring back nearly 40 letterwinners from last year's squad, one which was ranked No. 1 for most of the season, won the program's first Big 12 Championship and claimed the team's third straight western national championship.

Among the top returners on the hunter seat squad are senior All-American Lia Chafee, who totaled 21 wins on both the flat and over fences; senior Elizabeth Solch (9 flat wins); senior Hannah Soibelman (11 flat wins); and junior All-American Emily Williams, who set a school record with 14 wins over fences last year.

On the western side, a pair of All-Americans lead the horsemanship squad into 2012-senior Katie Lisabeth (11 wins, 3 MVPs) and junior Carey Nowacek (11 wins, 4 MVPs). Headlining the returning reiners are senior Abigail Grabein (11 wins, 3 MVPs) and junior Becca Murray (9 wins).

A&M has faced Delaware State just once before, a 15-5 Aggie victory at the Brazos County Expo Complex in January 2010. Fresno State is also winless in four tries against Texas A&M, including an 11-7 Aggie win last March on the west coast.
