AGGIE FRESHMAN ADVANCES TO ITA ALL-AMERICAN QUALIFYING ROUNDS

Texas A&M freshman Jeremy Efferding won four matches in the pre-qualifying tournament of the 2011 ITA Men's All-American Championships being held at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma this past weekend. Efferding will be matched against Yannick Maden from Clemson on Monday (Oct. 3) in Tulsa.

TULSA, Okla. — Texas A&M freshman Jeremy Efferding won four matches in the pre-qualifying tournament of the 2011 ITA Men's All-American Championships being held at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma this past weekend. Efferding will be matched against Yannick Maden from Clemson on Monday (Oct. 3) in Tulsa.

Efferding, from Boca Raton, Florida, defeated Javier Pulgar from San Diego State in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3, to advance to the qualifying rounds. Efferding reached the final round by defeating Hunter Harrington from Clemson, 2-6, 7-6 (6), 6-0.

Efferding had A&M company on Sunday as two other Aggis advanced to the third round. Another freshman, Jackson Withrow from Omaha, Nebraska, had a bye to the second round and defeated Cody Hall from South Alabama, 6-4, 7-6 (4) to advance to the third round. Daniel Brown, from Montgomery, Texas, defeated Skip Span from Illinois State in the first round, 6-0, 4-6, 6-2 and his second-round opponent, Ola Bakke from San Francisco withdrew.

Alen Salibasic from Drake defeated Withrow, 6-3, 6-3 and Johan Backstrom from Ole Miss defeated Brown in the third round, 6-3, 7-6 (3).

In the pre-qualifying opening round, senior John Lewis, from Birmingham, Alabama, dropped a three-set match to Joe Salisbury from Memphis, 6-7 (4), 6-4, 6-4. Junior Beau Blackshear, from Brentwood, Tennessee, lost a first-round match to Carlin Murray from Louisiana-Lafayette, 6-2, 6-0. Ramiro Blanco from USC Upstate defeated Aggie freshman Jordan Szabo, 6-4, 6-4. Szabo is from Bayswater, Victoria, Australia.

Other Texas A&M players in the qualifying first round include senior Colin Hoover, from Victoria, Texas, who will face the No. 5 seed Nikola Bubnic from San Diego. Junior Alberta Bautista, from McAllen, Texas, faces Zach White from Mississippi State in his first-round match while another junior, Niall Angus from London, England, will take on Jenson Turner from Pepperdine. Sophomore Junior Ore, from Gaithersburg, Maryland, will face Dane Webb from Oklahoma in another first-round match today in Tulsa.
