COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Junior Mel Dumezich and senior Lindsey sisk split time in the circle and combined for a no-hitter as the Texas A&M softball team pummeled Temple College in a 12-0 victory on Wednesday at the Aggie Softball Complex.
Temple couldn't regain control after the Aggies jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the second. Junior Mel Dumezich led off with a single to the shortstop that bounced wild as the infielder scrambled to make a play, before Dumezich took second on a throwing error.
Sophomore transfer Jenna Stark followed Dumezich onto the bags, and a double steal put the pair in scoring position at second and third. A laser down the left field line by junior Sydney Shannon scored Dumezich and sent Stark to third. Shannon stole second before senior Kelsea Orsak placed a shot in the gap in left-center that scored two runners for the 3-0 lead. A single to left-center by junior Brittany Walker plated the final run of the inning as Orsak ran home.
The bottom of the third gave the Aggies the advantage of an extra run. Senior Natalie Villarreal hit an infield single and was later pushed home on another base hit, down the left field line off of the bat of sophomore Nicole Morgan.
A&M had another scoring rally in the fourth, pulling ahead to an 8-0 lead on the Leopards. Sophomore Kaydee Rayburn took a leadoff walk and showed her true speed as she flew home from first on a double to left-center by Shannon.
Shannon later crossed the plate on a wild pitch. Orsak, who had reached on a single to right field, took third on the same ball and scored on an illegal pitch.
The Aggies again plated three runs in the bottom of the fifth. Sophomore Meagan May was walked before Rayburn entered to run at first. A single down the third base line by Sisk advanced Rayburn before a second single, into the gap in right-center by sophomore Taran Tyler, gave the pinch runner enough room to score the 9-0 run. Sisk was forced home on a walk before a single to short by Orsak plated the final run of the inning and put A&M up 11-0.
The teams played through the bottom of the seventh to give both sides extra practice. The extra half-inning gave the Aggies their final run of the game when sophomore Emily Albus scored from third on a groundout.
Temple was unable to get a run across as the Aggies posted a 12-0 shutout. Dumezich spent the first four innings in the circle, fanning four batters and forcing four groundouts. Sisk finished the game, throwing four strikeouts in three innings of relief and only allowing one batter on base. The pair threw a no-hitter, allowing only two runners on base throughout the game.
The team returns to fall action Saturday as the Aggies host the Texas A&M Fall Invitational at the Aggie Softball Complex. A&M will face Sam Houston State at 10 a.m., followed by a 12:15 p.m. game vs. North Texas. Sam Houston and North Texas will finish the day with a 2:30 neutral game.
