Aggies Cruise Past Drake, 6-1
Oct 14, 2011 | Soccer
COLLEGE STATION, TEXAS - Texas A&M soccer freshmen Kelley Monogue and Allie Bailey each scored a pair of goals and contributed an assist to help pace the Aggies to a convincing 6-1 victory over Drake on Friday night at Ellis Field.
In front of a crowd of 4,316, the freshman duo played a part in nearly every goal of the evening as A&M improved to 11-5 with the win. The Aggies have now won eight of their last nine games. The Bulldogs slid to 3-8-4 on the season with the loss.
"Tonight was an overall good performance from all of our players, especially with six goals," said A&M head coach G Guerrieri. "Drake played hard and they kept a lot of numbers behind the ball all the time, which made finishing difficult because it was really congested in the penalty area. We'll take the win and now have the rest of the weekend off to get ready for Oklahoma and Oklahoma State next weekend."
The Aggies wasted no time getting on the scoreboard against Drake with a goal from senior Merritt Mathias less than five minutes into the match. With possession inside the crowded penalty area, senior Rachel Balaguer fired a shot that drew the Drake goalkeeper off her line, but was blocked by a defender. Mathias then picked up the rebound and knocked the ball into the open goal to get A&M out to a quick 1-0 lead.
Seven minutes later, Monogue got into the scoring mix as she chipped a pass to freshman Annie Kunz on the right edge of the six-yard box. Kunz, with a slight flick from the toe of Mathias on the cross, then found Monogue in the center of the box and the McKinney, Texas, native finished with a one-timer to the upper-right 90.
A&M continued to dominate the first half as freshman Meghan Streight won a ball near the halfway line in the 40th minute. Bailey reward her soon after by slotting a pass to Streight from the top of the box. From 12 yards, Streight then had a nice finish to far post to give the Aggies a 3-0 lead at the half.
A&M burst out of the halftime break with a goal from Monogue less than three minutes in. Junior Beth West took on a mass of Drake defenders, worked the ball down the right flank and sent a cross to Monogue who one-touched a shot into the left-side netting for the 4-0 Aggie lead.
Drake's Laura Moklestad scored the Bulldogs' lone goal of the evening in the 61st minute, but Texas A&M answered eight minutes later.
Balaguer found Monogue on the right side of the penalty area and as she dribbled down the line looked up and sent a cross to Bailey. Bailey's one-timer went past the Drake keeper, inside the far post.
Bailey also netted A&M's final goal of the game in the 88th minute after she received a pass out wide from redshirt junior Katie Hamilton. Bailey then dribbled towards the center of the field and took advantage of an open look from 22 yards out for the final 6-1 tally.
The Aggie defense held Drake to just six shots on the evening, while firing off 27. Freshman keeper Jordan Day made three saves and picked up the win in goal.
Up next, the Aggies host a pair of key conference games at Ellis Field, welcoming Oklahoma on Friday, Oct. 21 at 6:30 p.m. and Oklahoma State on Sunday, Oct. 23 at 3 p.m.
