Western Sweep Leads Aggies to Win at NMSU

Carey Nowacek sets school record with fourth straight horsemanship MVP; Aggies improve to 4-0.

LAS CRUCES, N.M.-The Aggie western team posted a sweep in a regular-season show for just the second time in school history to lift the Texas A&M equestrian team to a 12-7 victory at New Mexico State Saturday afternoon at the New Mexico State Equestrian Center.

The three-time defending national champions flexed their muscle on the road, winning all 10 rides for only the second time ever-and first time since 2007. In addition, the 10 wins by the western team tied a school record.

Texas A&M moved to a perfect 4-0 on the season with the victory, while NMSU fell to 1-2.

The horsemanship squad opened the strong afternoon by the western riders by winning all five rides in dominating fashion. The team posted its three highest scores of the season with victories by Katie Lisabeth (77.5-72), Amanda Brightwell (76.5-74) and Carey Nowacek (76-73.5). Completing the sweep were Cassie Mantor and Kelsey Adams off identical 73-point scores.

Nowacek set a school record with her fourth consecutive horsemanship MVP. The San Antonio native also matched the overall school record of four straight MVP awards, set by reiner Maggie Gratny in 2007 and 2010.

The reiners were not to be outdone, icing the overall team victory for the Aggies with five wins of their own. MVP Lindsey Bernbaum's 74-point ride was the second highest of the year by the reiners, who also picked up victories from Becca Murray (71-70), Abigail Grabein (71-70), Emma Myers (72.5-70) and Courtney Dawe (71.5-64.5).

On the hunter seat side, victories went to Lia Chafee-who downed Amber Tassel 77-74 over fences-and Elizabeth Solch-who topped Brianna Raab on the flat, 81-69.

Texas A&M returns to action on Friday, Oct. 28 when the Aggies host TCU at the Brazos County Expo Complex. Show time is set for Noon and admission is free.
