NORMAN, Okla. - Juniors Mary Michael Maggio and Sarah Beth Davis guided the No. 11 Texas A&M women's golf team into first place on Monday at the Susie Maxwell Berning Classic at the Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club.
Maggio (Conway, Ark.) and Davis (Victoria, Texas) each shot a 3-under 69 to help give the Aggies the lowest round of the day and their lowest round of the season with 283.
A&M is atop the leaderboard at a 5-under 571 and holds a seven stroke lead over Florida State and Oklahoma who are tied for second at 578. Texas Tech (582) sits in fourth followed by New Mexico (587) in fifth.
"We played very well today," head coach Trelle McCombs said. "I'm so proud of each and every one of these ladies. They showed so much heart and it was great seeing them dig deep out there."
Sophomore Natalie Reeves (Euless, Texas) produced another sub-par round Monday with a 1-under 71 and leads all Aggies with a 3-under 141. She is in fourth place, just two shots out of the lead which is held by Oklahoma's Anne Tanguay (139).
Maggio vaulted herself up the leaderboard and is tied for fifth with 142. Her day started on the front nine where she birdied 8 to turn 1-under. She remained 1-under through the first four holes before back-to-back birdies on 14 and 15 moved her to 3-under.
Davis also climbed the leaderboard and is tied for seventh at 143. With birdies on 4 and 9, she made the turn 2-under. Birdies on 10 and 13 moved Davis to 4-under before she bogeyed 17 to finish her round 3-under.
Sophomore Katerina Ruzickova (Ostrava, Czech Republic) sits just out of the top 10 individually and is tied for 11th with 145 after shooting a 2-over 74 in the second round. Freshman Patricia Garcia (San Juan, Puerto Rico) turned in a 3-over 75 and is tied for 28th with 149.
The Aggies tee off in the third and final round Tuesday at 9 a.m. from the first hole. A&M is paired with the Seminoles and the Sooners.
