COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Sophomore Nicole Morgan hit two homeruns and drove in four RBI to lead White to a come-from-behind, 5-4 victory over Maroon in game three of the Maroon & White Series, giving White a 2-1 series advantage.
Maroon scored four in the first off freshman Sara Mireles but were unable to hold the lead as White stormed back and took game three in extra-innings.Â
Freshman Brittany Clopton was hot at the plate all day as she finished 3-for-3 with a walk and run scored. She was able to get Maroon started early with an infield single followed by a Sydney Shannon walk. Senior Natalie Villarreal then put Maroon on top 2-0 with a double to left center. She moved to third on a Lindsey Sisk single to right and then scored on a wild pitch. Sisk became Maroon's fourth run on a sac fly by sophomore Jenna Stark to center field.Â
It took white several innings to get going off senior Lindsey Sisk but they finally broke through in the fourth with Morgan's first homer of the day. Morgan took the first pitch she saw and hammered it to left-center to put White on the board and jump start the rally.Â
Morgan wasted no time in adding to her RBI total as she hit a 3-run round-tripper in the fifth to tie the game. Morgan's second blast of the day scored sophomore Amber Garza and junior Mel Dumezich who each reached on singles.Â
Maroon put together a rally to start the sixth with singles by freshmen Lauren Tamayo, Kaydee Rayburn and Clopton but they couldn't plate a run as Dumezich entered in relief to get White out of the jam.Â
Both teams remained scoreless through seven innings pushing the game into extra frames. Shannon led off the eighth with a single for Maroon but was left stranded at second as Dumezich struck out the next two batters before forcing a groundball to end the inning.
Junior Brittany Walker became the late-inning hero for White as she led off the bottom of the frame with a double off the center field wall and was moved to third on a perfectly executed sacrifice bunt by sophomore Emily Albus. She then slid in to home under the tag for the winning run on a fielder's choice by Garza.
Dumezich earned the win in relief pitching three scoreless and allowing one hit while striking out two.Â
