COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Led by six shutout innings from sophomore pitcher Rafael Pineda, the Plowboys earned a 7-0 victory over the Farmers Tuesday on Olsen Field at Blue Bell Park during the opening game of the Texas A&M baseball Maroon & White Series.
The Plowboys opened the scoring during the top of the first inning on an RBI single by freshman catcher Mitchell Nau, who went 2-for-4 at the plate with a pair of runs batted in.
Junior outfielder Tyler Naquin, the reigning Big 12 Player of the Year, provided the afternoon's biggest hit when he connected on a two-run homer in the top of the sixth.
Freshman infielder Andrew Brown, a local product from College Station's A&M Consolidated High School, extended the lead to 6-0 with a two-run double in the top of the eighth before classmate Cole Lankford added an RBI single in the ninth.
Rookie Daniel Mengden went 3-for-4 at the plate for the Farmers in the losing effort.
The Maroon & White Series will continue Wednesday with game two between the Farmers and the Plowboys at Blue Bell Park. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m. and seating for spectators is limited to Aggie Alley and the right field bullpen due to the renovations of the stadium.
