White Caps Series with Game 4 Victory

A 10-run first inning helped White to a 14-4 victory over Maroon in the final game of the Maroon & White Series, Wednesday at the Aggie Softball Complex.

COLLEGE STATION, Texas - A 10-run first inning helped White to a 14-4 victory over Maroon in the final game of the Maroon & White Series, Wednesday at the Aggie Softball Complex.

White took the best-of-five series in four games, with junior Mel Dumezich leading the way tonight. The right-handed pitcher was 2-for-2 with five RBI on a grand slam, a single and two walks.

Junior Brittany Walker led off in the top of the first with a single up the middle, her first of three on the night. A pair of bunt singles by sophomores Emily Albus and Amber Garza loaded the bases before a no-outs walk by Dumezich pushed the first run across.

The scoring didn't stop there as White plated four consecutive runs on a groundout, a two-RBI triple by sophomore Cassie Tysarczyk and a bunt single by sophomore Allison Garrett. With two outs, Walker hit a second base hit of the inning that sent a sixth run home.

After a second bunt single by Albus and a walk by Garza loaded the bases, Dumezich powered a grand slam over the fence to give White a 10-0 lead entering the bottom of the first.

Maroon retaliated in the bottom of the second, plating three runs to narrow the scoring gap. Sophomore transfer Jenna Stark opened the frame with a double to left-center and took third on a passed ball. Freshmen Lauren Tamayo and Brittany Clopton walked before a two-out Natalie Villarreal double scored the trio.

In the top of the third, White surged ahead to another 10-run lead. A single to right field by Tysarczyk pushed the first run of the inning home before Dumezich slid across the plate during a rundown with sophomore Nicole Morgan between second and third. A two-out base hit by Albus sent Tysarczyk home for the 13-3 lead.

Stark had her second hit of the day, Maroon's only home run, when she cleared left field in the bottom of the third.

White took its final 14-4 lead in the top of the fourth. Albus flew home on a bases-loaded single to right field by senior Kelsea Orsak before two quick outs ended the half-inning.

Maroon made a final attempt at a rally in the bottom of the fifth when sophomore Taran Tyler slammed a triple into right field, but the third baseman was left stranded and White took a 3-1 series victory.

The game wrapped up the Aggies' fall slate. The team will return to the diamond on Feb. 10, 2012 with a game against Stanford in the Kajikawa Classic in Tempe, Ariz. To learn more about Texas A&M softball, log on to AggieAthletics.com.
