FORT WORTH - Texas A&M junior Cristina Sanchez-Quintanar won her third consecutive tournament match and her ninth straight overall to advance to the singles quarterfinals at the USTA/ITA Texas Regional Championships at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center on the TCU campus.
Sanchez-Quintanar also advances to the quarterfinals in doubles after she and partner Sun Wen, seeded No. 2, defeated Kseniya Bardabush and Valentina Starkova of North Texas, 8-3, in the round of 16. They will take on fifth-seeded Krista Damico and Aeriel Ellis of Texas Sunday at 10 a.m.
In singles, Sanchez-Quintanar defeated Frederica Denti of TCU, 7-5, 6-1 in the Round of 32 and topped No. 9 seed Samantha Adams, 6-3, 6-3, in the round of 16 today and will face seventh-seed Edyta Cieplucha of SMU Sunday at 12:30 p.m. in the quarterfinal round.
A&M's Sheri Olivier also will be competing in singles on Sunday as she has advanced to the consolation quarterfinals after winning a pair of matches today. The senior defeated Dariya Abdrakhmanova of UT-El Paso, 6-3, 6-1, in the third round and then knocked off Wanda Beguelin of UT-Pan American, 6-1, 6-1 in the fourth round to advance.
Olivier will face Liselot Koenen of Houston Sunday at 12:30 p.m.
The tournament runs through Tuesday. The champions of the USTA/ITA Texas Regional, along with winners from the other 11 regions across the United States, advance to the prestigious USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships. That event is Nov. 3-6 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, New York.
