College Station, Texas - The Texas A&M men's tennis team completed its first day of play Friday at the USTA/ITA Texas Regional Championships at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center. The Aggies were undefeated on the day, advancing six men in singles and five doubles teams to the next round.
In singles play, Jackson Withrow, Junior Ore, Alberto Bautista, Niall Angus, Colin Hoover, and John Lewis will continue onto the round of 32, all defeating their opponents in the round of 64 in straight sets. Doubles will continue to see the tandems of Daniel Brown and Jordan Szbazo, fifth-seeded Alberto Bautista and Jackson Withrow, John Lewis and Sitaram, fourth-seeded Alex Klegou and Junior Ore and Jeremy Efferding and Colin Hoover. Denton had special praise for Lewis, who knocked off opponent Ricardo Hopker of UT-Pan American 6-1, 6-1.
The men continue play on Saturday at 8:30 a.m., at the Mitchell Tennis Center. Admission is free. "This is a great time for Aggie Tennis and a great opportunity to come out and watch the guys play. Having the 12th man support always has a positive impact on our guys" stated Coach Denton.
The champions of the USTA/ITA Texas Regional, along with winners from the other 11 regions across the United States, advance to the prestigious USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships. That event is Nov. 3-6 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, New York.
