Aggie Women Advance to Semifinals

FORT WORTH - Texas A&M's Cristina Sanchez-Quintanar continued her success at the USTA/ITA Texas Regional Championships today, earning a berth in the semifinals in singles, as well as doubles with partner Sun Wen.

The junior from Spain won her fourth consecutive singles match at the tournament and extended her overall winning streak to 10 by defeating No. 7 seed Edyta Cieplucha of SMU, 6-4, 6-1, in the quarterfinals. Sanchez-Quintanar, the No. 3 seed, faces No. 2 seed Aeriel Ellis of Texas in the semifinal round Monday at 12:30 p.m. at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center on the TCU campus.

Sanchez-Quintanar and doubles partner Sun Wen eliminated Ellis and her partner Krista Damico in the doubles quarterfinals, coming back to defeat the fifth-seeded Longhorns, 9-7. Second-seeded Sanchez-Quintanar and Wen face No. 3 seed Diana Nakic and Jordaan Sanford of Baylor Monday at 10 a.m. for a chance to advance to the finals.

Aggie Sheri Olivier's run in the consolation bracket came to an end in the quarterfinals today as the senior fell in a close one to Liselot Koenen of Houston, 6-3; 3-6; 7-6 (10-5).

The tournament runs through Tuesday. The champions of the USTA/ITA Texas Regional, along with winners from the other 11 regions across the United States, advance to the prestigious USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships. That event is Nov. 3-6 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, New York.
