FORT WORTH - The Texas A&M duo of Sun Wen and Cristina Sanchez-Quintanar has advanced to the doubles championship match at the USTA/ITA Texas Regional Championships, and Sanchez-Quintanar also has advanced to the finals in singles.
No. 2 seed Wen and Sanchez-Quintanar will face No. 6 seed Millie Nichols and Olivia Smith of TCU Tuesday at 10 a.m. at the at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center on the TCU campus, with the winner receiving an automatic berth into the prestigious USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships, Nov. 3-6, at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, New York.
Wen and Sanchez-Quintanar held off No. 3 seed Diana Nakic and Jordaan Sanford of Baylor, 8-6, in today's semifinal match to advance. Nichols and Smith knocked off the No. 1 seed Edyta Cieplucha and Marta Lesniak of SMU, 8-5, in the other semifinal match.
Immediately following the doubles championship, Sanchez-Quintanar will return to the courts to compete in the singles championship for another opportunity to earn a spot at the National Indoor Championships. Seeded No. 3 in singles, Sanchez-Quintanar will square off against fourth-seeded Nakic.
Sanchez-Quintanar advanced to the championship after No. 2 seed Aeriel Ellis of Texas retired due to illness trailing 3-2 in the first set of the semifinals.
Nakic defeated top seeded Lesniak of SMU, 6-2, 6-3 to advance to the championship match.
