A&M Falls in Finals at Texas Regional Championships

Texas A&M's run in the USTA/ITA Texas Regional Championships came to an end as the Aggies fell in the finals in both doubles and singles at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center on the TCU campus.

FORT WORTH - Texas A&M's run in the USTA/ITA Texas Regional Championships came to an end as the Aggies fell in the finals in both doubles and singles today at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center on the TCU campus.

"Obviously it was a tough day," A&M coach Howard Joffe said. "Early on in both matches, we had opportunities, but for various reasons it was just not our day. But it was no accident that we were in the finals in both singles and doubles, and as an aggregate, I am very delighted with Sun (Wen) and Cristina (Sanchez-Quintanar) and our results in the tournament."

The Aggie tandem of Wen and Sanchez-Quintanar fell to No. 6 seed Millie Nichols and Olivia Smith of TCU, 8-5, in the doubles championship on the Frogs' home court.

"We led 3-1 and had chances to go up 4-1 and later tie at 4-4, but we had some missed opportunities," Joffe said. "Certainly the TCU team deserves credit as they came up with insane shots and made the plays when it counted."

Sanchez-Quintanar returned to the court immediately following the doubles event to compete in the singles championship match, where she fell to No. 4 seed Diana Nakic of Baylor, 6-3, 6-1.

"Cristina was just mentally fatigued and not at her best in the end, but she gave great effort and conducted herself well," Joffe added. "Most importantly, Cristina has made many improvements, not only in the adjustments to her game but in her personal growth in coming to A&M and doing well in school."

The Aggies wrap up the fall schedule Nov. 4-6 as they compete in the UNC Kitty Harrison Invitational in Chapel Hill, N.C.

"Our goal continues to be to get better, and the trajectory is definitely on the way up," Joffe said. "The girls are playing better, and I am very pleased with the progress. Our challenge is to keep improving."
