COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The Texas A&M soccer team placed seven players on TopDrawerSoccer.com's Freshman Top 100 List, headlined by forward Kelley Monogue taking the No. 1 spot, the publication announced today.
Monogue (McKinney, Texas) is joined in the top 10 by fellow forward Annie Kunz (Golden, Colo.), who reached No. 7 in the rankings. Meghan Streight (McKinney, Texas) sits at No. 33 and is joined in the top 50 by goalkeeper Jordan Day (Gilbert, Ariz.) at No. 43. Superior work by No. 52 Allie Bailey (San Diego, Calif.), No. 64 Shea Groom (Liberty, Mo.) and No. 71 Katie Perry (Mission Viejo, Calif.) also earned the freshmen spots on the list.
This is not the first award for Aggie freshmen. The A&M Class of 2015 owns nine Big 12 Player of the Week awards, including four won by Monogue in the last five weeks. Day was recently named the Big 12 Newcomer of the Week and the CollegeSoccer360.com Primetime Player of the Week, leading the nation in that honor.
These seven Aggies have made a big impact on the team in 2011. Monogue and Kunz lead the team offensively, while Day has spent 1210:47 minutes in goal for A&M. Streight is a regular force in the midfield and on defense, and Perry has made a game-changing play in the midfield on numerous occasions. Bailey and Groom have proven to be outstanding offensive powers on the attack, netting six goals and assisting four each.
As a class, the Aggies' 10 freshmen have scored 43 of the team's 61 goals, 70 percent of the grand total. Monogue ranks eighth in the nation in total goals (15), ninth in total points (38) and 12th in points per game (2.11) and goals per game (0.833), while leading the Big 12 in each category. Kunz sits at second in the conference in points (28) and goals (11), while Day leads the league in Big 12 games with a .941 save percentage. She is also second in goals against average (0.32), shutouts (4) and shutouts per game (0.57).
The No. 22 Aggies face Texas tonight in Austin. The match is set for a 6 p.m. kickoff and will be broadcast on AggieAthletics.com (live audio and live stats) and The Longhorn Network (live video). The Aggies are guaranteed to finish second in regular-season conference play, and will enter the Big 12 Tournament next week as the No. 2 seed.
