SPRING, Texas - The Texas A&M softball team tied with Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in a scoreless battle before shutting out Stephen F. Austin, 5-0, on Saturday at the Spring Klein Girls' Softball League (SKGSL) Classic.
The Aggies are now 2-0-1 in the exhibition season. Senior Lindsey Sisk led the way in the circle in game one, fanning 11 batters and walking only two. The right-handed pitcher gave up no runs for the shutout. The game was stopped after the seventh due to tournament rules that wouldn't allow extra innings, and the Aggies and Islanders walked away with a tie.
In game two the Aggies posted another shutout, and plated five runs of their own for the win over SFA.
In the first sophomore Nicole Morgan powered a two-run double to left field that scored freshman Brittany Clopton and senior Natalie Villarreal. Clopton had reached on a single, while Villarreal followed her onto the bags on a fielder's choice.
Villarreal was again sent home on a play by Morgan in the third, giving the Aggies a 3-0 lead over the Ladyjacks. Morgan hit a two-out fly ball to left that was dropped by the outfielder as Villarreal flew home for her second run of the game.
In the next inning sophomore Cassie Tysarczyk slugged a solo bomb over center, and junior Mel Dumezich found the same spot in the fifth, sending the Aggies out to their final 5-0 lead.
Dumezich allowed no runs in her time in the circle, striking out 12 batters in six innings of work. Freshman hurler Lauren Ainsley entered the game in relief and went three-up, three-down, forcing all three batters to hit ground balls.
Junior Brittany Walker also had a big game for the Aggies, going 2-for-4 with two singles. Dumezich was 1-for-2 with a home run, a sacrifice bunt and a walk while Morgan had two RBI on the game.
The Aggies return to the diamond Wednesday within the confines of the Aggie Softball Complex, hosting Temple College in a 6 p.m. game. Admission will be free to the public.
The TC Leopards recently announced the addition of head coach Kristen Zaleski, a 2000 graduate of TC, a two-time NFCA All-American at Texas State and a former professional player. Last season the team was 47-14 overall, and 26-2 in conference play. The team is comprised of seven sophomores and 11 freshmen.
The game will be broadcast live on AggieAthletics.com as well as 95.1-3 The Zone HD, making it available worldwide from any smartphone or HD radio, or online at RadioAggieland.com, where the app can be downloaded. To learn more about Texas A&M softball, log on to AggieAthletics.com.
