Aggies set to battle Texas for 118th time
Texas
A&M and Texas battle in the 118th renewal of their longtime rivalry
and also for the last time as members of the Big 12 Conference when the
two teams meet at 7 p.m. on Thanksgiving night at Kyle Field. The game
will be nationally televised by ESPN.
The Aggies are coming off a
61-7 victory over Kansas at Kyle Field that made them bowl-eligible,
while Texas fell to Kansas State 17-13 in Austin last Saturday.
The
Aggies trail the Longhorns in the overall series that began in 1984, but
the matchup between the two huge state schools has been virtually even
since the mid-1970s. In fact, since 1975, the Aggies hold the edge
19-17. In more recent history, the Aggies have won three of the last
five contests, including last year's 24-14 triumph in Austin. In the
most recent game in College Station, Texas pulled away for 49-39 win in
2009 on its way to the BCS Championship game against Alabama.
The
Texas A&M vs. Texas rivalry is one of the most-played series in
college football with just two other teams matching up more times (see
box). The two teams have played 96 consecutive years since 1915 (t8th
longest uninterrupted series). The series was halted 100 years ago in
1911. Charley Moran was the head coach of the Aggies and A&M had
defeated Texas three straight times in 1909 (twice) and 1910. Texas won
in 1911 (6-0) in a game played in Houston and the series took a break
until the formation of the Southwest Conference in 1915.

•
PK Randy Bullock is 14 points from matching the second-oldest record in
the Aggies' record book: Joel Hunt's single season scoring record of
128 points in 1927.
• Bullock is one FG from taking sole
possession of A&M's single season field goals record. He currently
is tied with Scott Slater, who originally set the school standard of 21
FGs in 1986.
• Bullock is one PAT from taking sole possession of
A&M single season extra points record. He has 51 successful PATs,
which is tied with Terry Venetoulias' 1993 output and his own 2009
effort.
• Bullock is five FG from Kyle Bryant's career record of 60 three-pointers from 1994-97.
• WR Jeff Fuller needs one TD (6 points) to become A&M's first non-RB or PK to hit 200 career points.
•
QB Ryan Tannehill is 103 passing yards away from 5,000 career yards.
Only six A&M QBs have hit the 5,000-yard mark -- Jerrod Johnson,
Reggie McNeal, Corey Pullig, Kevin Murray and Stephen McGee.
• WR
Ryan Swope is one receiving TD away from Jeff Fuller's season record of
12 from 2010. He is three TD catches from catching Bob Long (1966-68) at
No. 2 on the career receiving TDs list.
• Swope is three catches
from passing Terrence Murphy on the career catches list. Murphy entered
2011 as the school record holder (172 catches) but Fuller passed Murphy
in game two of the season.
• Former Katy HS teammates Trent
Hunter and Terrence Frederick are seeking milestones: Hunter needs seven
tackles to hit 300 for his career, while T-Fred needs a pass broken up
to hit 30 career PBUs. Frederick's next PBU will be his 13th of 2011,
which would put him in a tie for No. 3 on A&M's season list.
Senior Class of 2011
Twenty-nine
Aggies, including 10 members of Mike Sherman's first signing class,
will be honored on Senior Day prior to Thursday's Texas A&M-Texas
slugfest. On the senior class of 2011's résumé are 25 wins, two bowls
appearances and a 2010 Big 12 South division tri-championship. The
seniors have helped the 2011 Aggies achieve bowl eligibility and will
finish their careers at a bowl game.

Record-setting Bullock going Old School
With
two games remaining in 2011, record-setting placekicker Randy Bullock
is within range of the second-oldest record in the Aggies' record book.
With 114 points in 2011, Bullock is 14 points away from Joel Hunt's 128
points scored in 1927.

Big Play Specialist Harris Honored by Big 12
Junior
Dustin Harris was named Big 12 Special Teams Player of the Week on
Monday after reeling off a 72-yard TD punt return and breaking the
school record with 162 yards on three returns against Kansas. His
72-yard TD burst tied for the seventh longest in school history, and was
his second career punt return score (he also had a 54-yarder vs.
Louisiana Tech in 2010).
His current 20.5 punt return average would
lead the nation if he had the requisite 1.2 returns per game (he has 1.1
per game), and is on pace to break Aaron Glenn's school standard of
19.9 from 1993.

ROLE REVERSAL
The
Aggies haven't lost to a team from the state of Texas since dropping a
49-39 decision to No. 3 Texas in the 2009 regular season finale. When
the Aggies face the Longhorns on Thursday, it will have been 728 days
since A&M's most recent loss to a Texas school.
In head coach
Mike Sherman's first season in 2008, the Aggies were swept by all three
state of Texas opponents. Since then, however, the Aggies have compiled
an 9-1 record against Texas schools with wins over Texas Tech (3),
Baylor (3), Texas, Stephen F. Austin and SMU.
Trends and Notables
•
The Texas A&M offensive front hasn't allowed a sack since the
eighth game of the season vs. Missouri and hasn't had a holding penalty
since game two of 2011.
• RB Cyrus Gray has surpassed 1,000
rushing yards for the second straight year. He is the third Aggie to
post back-to-back 1,000 yard season, joining Greg Hill in 1991-92 and
George Woodard in 1976-77. He is the fourth Aggies to have multiple
1,000-yard seasons in his career (Hill, Darren Lewis and Woodard).
•
Gray has moved to No. 3 on A&M's career rushing chart with 3,298
yards. He passed Greg Hill (3,262 from 1992-94) and trails only Darren
Lewis (5,012 from 1987-90) and Curtis Dickey (3,703 from 1976-79)
•
Gray is one of four Aggie RBs with multiple 200-yard rushing games. The
others are Darren Lewis (4), Bob Smith (2) and Curtis Dickey (2).
•
WR Ryan Swope broke the season school records of 72 catches (by Swope
and Jeff Fuller in 2010) and 1,066 receiving yards (by Fuller in 2010).
He entered the Texas game with 78 catches for 1,069 yards and 11 TDs
(No. 2 in school history behind Fuller's 12 in 2010).
• QB Ryan
Tannehill became the second Aggie QB to surpass the 3,000 passing yards
plateau. He joins all-time leading passer Jerrod Johnson, who threw for
3,579 in 2009.
• Junior CB Dustin Harris broke A&M's punt
return record with 162 yards on three returns, including a 72-yard
return for a touchdown. His 162 yards broke the old school record of 131
(on three returns) by Aaron Glenn against Missouri in 1993. His
72-yarder tied for the seventh-longest in school history.
•
Senior QB Ryan Tannehill completed 80.8 percent (21-of-26) of his passes
last week vs. KU, which is tied for the second-highest in school
history (min. 25 attempts) behind Jerrod Johnson's 82.1 completion
percentage against Iowa State in 2009 (23-of-28). Tannehill also
competed 21-of-26 vs. SMU this season.
• The Wrecking Crew had a
season-high 15 tackles for loss vs. KU. A&M's six QB sacks were the
second-highest output of the season behind the eight in the
season-opener vs. SMU.
• For the second time in 2011, the Aggies were not forced to punt. A&M also didn't punt in the 55-28 romp over Baylor.
• Senior PK Randy Bullock had a career-high five touchbacks against KU.
•
The Aggies have scored 51-of-55 times in the red zone (inside 20) with
38 touchdowns/13 field goals. A&M's 94.0 percent success rate leads
the Big 12 Conference and ranks in a tie for No. 5 nationally.
• Opponents have 26 QB sacks/QB hurries vs. Aggies...Wrecking Crew has 72 QBS/QBH
•
On third down catches by Ryan Swope (21), Jeff Fuller (10) and Uzoma
Nwachukwu (4), the trio has produced a first down or touchdown on 35 of
42 catches.
• Swope and Fuller have produced a first down and/or TD 90 times on 134 combined catches (67.5 percent).
• Texas A&M ranks No. 3 nationally in first downs per game with a 27.4 average.

Bullock Shows Off Power Boost
Senior
placekicker Randy Bullock's hard work last summer has resulted in more
distance on his kickoffs. Currently the most accurate kicker in school
history with a career success rate of 76.4 percent on field goal
attempts, Bullock had registered only 27 touchbacks in 192 career
kickoffs (14.1 percent) prior to this season. In 2011, Bullock has 31
touchbacks on 82 kickoffs (36.5 percent), and is averaging 65.5 yards
per kickoff (nearly four-yard improvement from 2010). During fall camp,
Bullock referenced the key to his improvement: “The biggest thing is I'm
not having to play catch-up,” Bullock said. “Last year I had been sick
all summer. This year I came in healthy after working all summer and I'm
ready to go.”

Versatile Ryan Tannehill
No
Football Bowl Subdivision player ever can match senior quarterback Ryan
Tannehill's versatility résumé. Research has shown that Tannehill is
the only player in NCAA FBS history with a 400-yard passing game and a
200-yard receiving game to his credit. Tannehill is also the only FBS
player to surpass 4,000 passing yards and 1,500 receiving yards in his
career. The Big Spring High School product had his 200-yard receiving
day against Kansas State as a freshman, and posted his 400-yard passing
game in his starting debut last season against Texas Tech (ironically,
his father's alma mater). In addition, Tannehill remains the Aggies'
holder on placekicks and has three career punts to his credit.
2011 Update:
Tannehill is challenging a variety of school passing records while
completing 280-of-441 passes for 3,191 yards and 26 TDs. Posted 300-yard
passing games against Idaho, Oklahoma State, Missouri and Oklahoma, and
a 400-yard game against Baylor. Named Walter Camp National Player of
the Week and Davey O'Brien Quarterback of the Week for his six-TD,
415-yard passing effort vs. Baylor. Named a finalist for the Unitas
Award and a semifinalist for “The O'Brien” … received a National
Football Foundation Scholar-Athlete Award and was named a finalist for
the 2011 William v. Campbell Trophy, which is given annually to the
absolute best scholar-athlete in the nation.

Record-Setting Fuller
When
Jeff Fuller announced that he would forgo the 2011 NFL Draft and stay
at A&M for his senior season, it ensured that there would be a new
name at the top of every career receiving at the school.
2011 Update:
Has battled injuries this season, but has remained a high-level
contributor with 56 catches for 602 yards and four TDs in 2011 (No. 2 on
team in all three categories) ... Had season-highs with nine catches
for 82 yards vs. Arkansas.

Swope's Short Game Sets Table for Aggies
Lining
up all over the field, slot receiver Ryan Swope is Mr. Inside to Jeff
Fuller's Mr. Outside. Swope keeps the Aggie offense humming with his
repertoire of bubble screens, sweeps and over-the-middle catches, along
with his defense-stretching speed (he's regarded as the fastest receiver
on the team).
2011 Update: Broke the season record for
catches and receiving yards in a season last week. Is one TD catch from
matching season TD record. Named Big 12 Player of the Week by Rivals.com
after posting his first career 200-yard game with 206 yards against
Baylor. His four TD catches were a school record. Had 100-yard games vs.
SMU (8-109), Oklahoma State (7-105), Oklahoma (8-149) and Kansas
(9-137).
Swope's Résumé

Gray Joins Exclusive 3,000, 6,000 yards Clubs
Preseason
first-team All-Big 12 RB Cyrus Gray, a senior from DeSoto, Texas, is
the leading returning rusher in the conference after rushing for 1,133
yards in 2010. Always a solid running back, Gray took his game to the
next level in 2010. He earned the starting nod at RB over Christine
Michael in game seven, and then Michael suffered a season-ending broken
leg in game 8 which forced Gray to shoulder the bulk of the carries for
the first time in his career. The transformation was stunning as Gray
averaged 134.0 yards in the final seven games of the season after
gaining just an average of 32.5 yards in first six games of 2010.
2011 Update:
All-purpose yards school record holder continues to churn out the yards
and surpassed the 6,000-yard plateau against Missouri. Also passed
3,000-yard level in rushing vs. KSU. Nine-game streak of 100-yard
rushing games was snapped against Oklahoma State, one shy of A&M
record. Has 14 career 100-yard rushing games, including 12 in his last
18 games.
Gray's Résumé
• Named to “watch lists” for Doak Walker Award, the Maxwell Award and the Pony Express Award
• Big 12's leading returning rusher (1,133 in 2010)
•
Rushed for a career-high 223 yards on 27 carries in the 2010 regular
season finale against Texas, who was a record for an A&M player
against the Longhorns and was A&M's first 200-yard rushing game
since Leeland McElroy had 229 on 35 carries against LSU in 1995.
• A&M's game, season and career leader in KOR yards.
• Gray is A&M's career all purpose yardage leader.
