Aggies Close Fall Slate at Amelia National

Aggies join 15-team field Monday and Tuesday at Amelia National G & CC outside Jacksonville.

FERNANDINA BEACH, Fla.-Fresh off its first victory of the year, the Texas A&M men's golf team closes its fall season this week when the Aggies participate in the Amelia National Intercollegiate at Amelia National Golf and Country Club outside Jacksonville.

The tournament is scheduled for 54 holes, with two rounds taking place Monday and the final 18 holes on Tuesday on the par-72, 7,166-yard Fazio-designed course. A&M was not originally scheduled to play in the event, but added it late after the season-opening Husky Invitational was rained out.

"It was really nice of North Florida and Georgia Southern to let us in and let us play, because that's not something they had to do," head coach J.T. Higgins said. "They made room for us and we really appreciate the opportunity. It's going to be nice. Jacksonville is great, and I hear Amelia Island is the best part of Jacksonville. We've heard great things about the golf course. We're really looking forward to this tournament."

The Aggies claimed the Royal Oaks Intercollegiate title last Tuesday in Dallas, firing a 22-under 830 to top the field by one stroke. It was A&M's third ROI crown in the event's four-year history.

Texas A&M will join a 15-team field that includes hosts Georgia Southern and North Florida, Arkansas State, Elon, Francis Marion, Furman, Jacksonville, Penn State, Troy State, USC Upstate, VCU, Wofford, Winthrop and Xavier. It marks the first of two trips to the Atlantic Coast for the maroon and white this year, which will participate in the Hootie at Bulls Bay in South Carolina in March.

The Aggies will sport the same lineup that left Dallas victorious last week. Sophomore Johannes Veerman, who enters the week with the best stroke average on the team (70.56), has shot par or better in eight of his nine rounds this fall. He will be joined on the course by redshirt freshman Greg Yates (71.00), senior All-American Jordan Russell (71.89), junior All-American Cameron Peck (72.11) and senior Geoff Shaw (73.00).
