ATLANTA - Texas A&M women's basketball seniors Sydney Carter and Tyra White were among the selections on the Naismith Trophy Early-Season Watch List, the Atlanta Tipoff Club announced.
The watch list includes the top women's college basketball players from 35 schools around the country, and was compiled by the Atlanta Tipoff Club's Board of Selectors, which based its criteria on player performances from the previous year and expectations for the 2012 season.
Carter, a 5-foot-6 guard from DeSoto, Texas, averages 13.5 points, 3.0 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 2.8 steals per game as the Aggies' second-leading scorer through the team's first six games. She scored a season-high 21 points against Iowa, swiped a career-high eight steals versus No. 9 Louisville and is shooting 83 percent from the free-throw line. Carter was also named Preseason All-Big 12 Honorable Mention.
White, a six-foot guard from Kansas City, Mo., contributes 12.7 points and 4.8 rebounds per game for Texas A&M. She has amassed 1,139 career points and earned spots on the Wade Trophy Watch List, the John R. Wooden Preseason List and was selected Preseason All-Big 12. She scored a season-high 22 points in A&M's home opener against Lamar and had a team-high seven rebounds and four assists versus Temple.
The 2012 Naismith Trophy will be awarded at the NCAA Women's Final Four in Denver. In late February, the Atlanta Tipoff Club's Board of Selectors will compile a mid‐season team of the top 30 players in the nation. Then in March, the Naismith Trophy voting academy will vote to narrow the list to the four finalists.
The Naismith Trophy is the most prestigious national award presented annually to college basketball's player of the year.
