
Aggies Finish Second at Burns Intercollegiate; Hurley Falls in Playoff

KAHUKU, Hawai'i - The eighth-ranked Texas A&M golf team turned in its best round of the week on Friday en route to a second-place finish at the John A. Burns Intercollegiate on the north shore of O'ahu.
The Aggies carded a 13-under 275 to finish the tournament with a three-day, 24-under-par total of 840 (283-282-275) on the Palmer Course at Turtle Bay Resort. A&M finished six shots back of No. 19 California, which won the event with a 30-under 834 (283-274-277).
Highlighting the afternoon for the Aggies was senior John Hurley, who finished in a three-way tie for first place and tied a career best with a 10-under 206 (69-70-67). Hurley, playing as an individual, fell on the second playoff hole to Virginia's Ben Kohles.
No. 16 Virginia (846, -18) finished third, followed by New Mexico (-12), Nevada (-10), SMU (-7), Fresno State (-4), Arizona (+3), host Hawai'i (+6) and Denver (+15). BYU (+19) finished in 11th place, with UTEP (+27), BYU-Hawai'i (+29), Hawai'i-Hilo (+31), Hawai'i Pacific (+32), Utah (+46) and Hawai'i's "B" team (+64) rounding out the field.
Individually for the Aggies, junior Jordan Russell (69-72-67=208) finished at 8-under, two shots back of the lead and in a tie for fourth place with teammate Conrad Shindler. Shindler (68-68-72) set a new career best with his three-day total of 208 (-8).
Senior Nacho Elvira shot a team-low 66 on Friday, finishing in 17th place with a 3-under 213 (75-72-66). Sophomore Cameron Peck (76-70-70=216) placed 28th at even par, with sophomore Case Cochran (71-76-76=223, +7) placing 52nd.
Texas A&M returns to action next Saturday and Sunday (Feb. 26-27) when the Aggies compete in the Wyoming Desert Classic at The Classic Club in Palm Desert, Calif.
