AWENDAW, S.C. - The seventh-ranked Texas A&M men's golf team carded a 2-over 286 on Tuesday and finished in a tie for fifth place at the Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate at Bulls Bay Golf Club.
The Aggies (282-288-286) completed the tournament at 4-over 856, seven shots back of the champion, No. 12 LSU (849, -3). A&M has finished fifth or better in every tournament this season. Defending national champion and No. 9-ranked Augusta State (-2) was one shot back in second and the only other team to break par on the week. No. 6 Auburn (+3) and No. 23 Duke (+3) tied for third.
"We played hard but just couldn't seem to get anything going," head coach J.T. Higgins said. "I thought we hit enough good shots to post a pretty good round but the putts just didn't drop today."
Wake Forest (+4) and No. 21 N.C. State (+4) were tied with Texas A&M in fifth place, while No. 5 Florida (+17) finished a distant eighth, Ole Miss (+20) ninth and North Florida (+25) and No. 15 Virginia (+25) 10th. Rounding out the field were North Carolina (+27), South Carolina (+31), Kentucky (+32) and host College of Charleston (+60).
Senior Nacho Elvira recorded his third top-10 finish of the year, placing seventh with a 2-under 211 (71-68-72). Elvira was four shots back of medalists Mitchell Sutton of N.C. State and Andrew Loupe of LSU (207, -6).
Senior Conrad Shindler (70-72-74=216) tied for 24th at 3-over par, junior Jordan Russell (74-73-70=217, +4) finished 31st, senior John Hurley (71-77-70=218, +5) placed 37th and sophomore Cameron Peck (70-75-75=220, +7) was 41st.
"I thought we did ok for our first time on this course but there is no question that we expect to play better," Higgins said. "We will get home, get some rest and work to get better before the Aggie in a couple weeks."
The Aggies return to action April 16-17 when they play host to the fifth-annual Aggie Invitational at Traditions Club in Bryan. Much more about the tournament will be available in the coming days. It is the team's only home event of the season and will be held in conjunction with Parents Weekend and on the same weekend as the Maroon and White Football Game.
