COLLEGE STATION Texas - An eighth-inning Aggie rally fell just short as No. 7 TCU escaped Olsen Field with a 4-2 win over the No. 6 Texas A&M baseball team Tuesday night.
The result left both teams with identical 26-11 records as the Mountain West and co-Big 12 leaders return to league play in their respective conferences this weekend.
Solo home runs by the Horned Frogs became an unfortunate trend for the Aggies as a trio of big flies constituted the majority of the visitor's offensive output on the night.
TCU catcher Josh Elander made the initial splash on the scoreboard as he connected on his first long ball of the season off Texas A&M starter Brandon Parrent (1-4) with one out in the top of the second.
The Aggies quickly answered in the home half of the second as senior catcher Kevin Gonzalez's RBI ground out made it 1-1.
Zac Jordan and Jantzen Witte homered to lead off the TCU fifth and sixth innings, respectively, as the Horned Frogs moved out to a 3-1 advantage. All three home runs were charged to Parrent, who allowed the three runs on six hits in five innings of work while striking out four and walking none.
Sophomore reliever Kyle Martin replaced Parrent on the mound and gave the Aggies two scoreless innings that kept the home squad within striking distance.
Texas A&M's comeback attempt in the eighth inning began with two men out in the frame as sophomore right fielder Tyler Naquin doubled to deep right field. The knock extended his career-long hitting streak to 13 games and gave the Aggies their first extra base hit of the night.
Freshman outfielder Krey Bratsen followed with a triple over the head of his TCU counterpart in center field to plate Naquin and cut the deficit to 3-2. Junior first baseman Jacob House followed with an 11-pitch battle at the plate against Horned Frog reliever Erik Miller, but unfortunately for A&M, Miller finally retired House on a ground out to first.
TCU tacked on an insurance run in top of the ninth off A&M reliever Joaquin Hinojosa and the Aggies were unable to mount a comeback attempt against the Horned Frogs' Stefan Crichton, who pitched a 1-2-3 bottom of the ninth for his second save.
The Aggies are back in action at Olsen Field this weekend, when they host No. 15 Oklahoma State in a pivotal Big 12 Conference series.
