No. 7 Florida Squeezes Out 3-2 Win Over Aggies
Aug 26, 2011 | Soccer
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - The No. 17 Texas A&M soccer team dropped a 3-2 decision to No. 7 Florida Friday in the Aggies' first match of the Tennessee Lady Vol Classic.
The Aggies (1-2) led the match offensively but were unable to get a goal across in the second half as the Gators (3-0) continued their winning streak, pulling four shots by the Aggies off of the goal line.
"The first half was a pretty even half," head coach G Guerrieri said. "We led 8-to-7 in shots and we made some adjustments. We talked about things we wanted to do in the second half and the players came out and did everything but put the ball in the back of the net. I thought Florida did a great job of withstanding a lot of pressure by us."
The Gators grabbed the first goal of the match in the 25th minute when Erika Tymrak split the defense and took a pass from Havana Solaun for the 1-0 lead.
A&M retaliated in a big way with two goals in the next ten minutes. Freshman Annie Kunz started the scoring rally in the 30th minute when she high-kicked a free kick from senior Merritt Mathias in the goal box. The Golden, Colo., native's first career goal tied the match at 1-1.
Five minutes later, junior Nora Skelton passed to freshman Kelley Monogue, who found a gap on the left side of the field and dribbled to the Aggies' attacking third before taking a shot. The kick sailed easily past the Florida goalie and into the back left corner of the net for A&M's first lead of the match.
Florida took the game into a draw again with just over minutes left in the first period. The swarming Aggie defense thwarted several shots before Taylor Travis headed a shot from Lindsay Thompson into the goal.
The teams played most of the second half locked in a 2-2 draw. The Aggies pulled ahead to a 21-to-11 shots advantage before the Gators finished off with a third goal.
In the 59th minute, Florida threatened to score when they drew Day out of the box. With the Aggie goalie on the ground, the Gators took advantage with a shot on goal. Sophomore Rachel Lenz was posed in the box, however and kicked the shot out for a save.
In the 71st minute redshirt junior Katie Hamilton took the ball with no goalie in the box. She sent a shot from 10 yards that slammed into the left post, just missing a goal for A&M.
With 15 seconds remaining in regulation and an overtime period looming, Jazmyne Avant sent a lateral pass to McKenzie Barney at the top of the goal box. Barney sent a zinger into the net for the 3-2 win as the time ran out on A&M.
Day (1-2) suffered the loss after making four saves on the match. Florida goalkeeper Brooke Chancey (2-0) earned the win with two goals allowed and five saves. A&M posted a 21-to-12 shots advantage and led in corner kicks, 4-to-1.
