Aggies Open 2012 vs. SMU, Incarnate Word

Both Texas A&M swimming and diving teams will open the 2012 portion of their schedules when the Aggie women take SMU and the men host Incarnate Word at 2 p.m. on Thursday

COLLEGE STATION - Both Texas A&M swimming and diving teams will open the 2012 portion of their schedules when the Aggie women take on SMU and the men host Incarnate Word at 2 p.m. on Thursday at the Student Recreation Natatorium.

Texas A&M women's head coach Steve Bultman encouraged fans to support the swimming and diving teams by attending Thursday's dual meets, since the two Aggie squads will only have one more home event each this spring. Admission to Thursday's dual meets is free, and live results and video will be available at AggieAthletics.com.

The Aggie women go into the spring semester ranked No. 7 nationally, and are 2-1 in dual meets with a team win at the Tennessee Invitational. The showdown against unranked SMU will be the Aggies' first action since beating Rice 160.5-95.5 on Dec. 3.

"It's been since the beginning of December since we've raced, and we've been doing some good, solid training since then," Aggie women's head coach Steve Bultman said. "It's time to get back in the race-mode again because we're just over a month away from the Big 12 Championships. It's coming up. The heart of our season is upon us."

The No. 17-ranked Aggie men's squad will get a solid test from the Cardinals of Incarnate Word, which are ranked No. 6 in the NCAA Div. II ranks. The Aggies won all three dual meets during the fall season, but haven't raced since early December at the Texas Invitational.

"We are excited to get up and race because we've been training this whole time," Aggie men's head coach Jay Holmes said. "Training is obviously a huge part of what we do, but the end result of all that training is the opportunity to race. This is an opportunity for all our guys to get up on the blocks and race, and that's ultimately what we do all this training for. I'm looking forward to seeing the guys compete, and I think it's going to be a fun and competitive meet."

After Thursday's dual against SMU, Bultman's Aggies will get right back in the water at the three-day Austin Grand Prix where they will face Olympic hopefuls from around the world. The 2012 Summer Olympic Games will be contested in London.

"We have very high goals for the collegiate season, but every four years the Olympics come up and that's pretty darned important too," Bultman said. "In preparation for the Olympics, we train a little bit more at the long course distance and the Austin Grand Prix will be a good opportunity for us to race against some really strong competition."
