COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Texas A&M softball junior Meagan May will try out for the 2012 USA Women's National Team and the USA Softball Women's Elite National Team, the Amateur Softball Association (ASA) announced today.
The selection camps, to take place in June, will fill the remaining five spots on the 17-player WNT squad and will determine the full 17-player Elite National Team roster. The softball national governing body announced the selection of 12 of the WNT athletes.
May (Spring, Texas) joined the 2011 WNT at the Pan Am Games in Guadalajara, Mexico in October, helping the USA team to an eighth gold medal. As a rising sophomore, May was selected to the USA Softball Futures Team but was forced to end the season early after a June 2010 car accident.
The junior catcher has been a mainstay for the Aggies in her first two seasons, both behind and at the plate. In her rookie season, May broke the team and Big 12 records for home runs in a season with 24. Despite two major injuries last season, May led the Aggies with a .748 slugging percentage and was second on the team with 14 home runs and 37 walks. A big NCAA Tournament performance landed her on the All-College Station Regional team.
The Aggies open the 2012 season at the Kajikawa Classic in Tempe, Ariz. on Feb. 10 and return to College Station for a Feb. 15 home opener vs. Sam Houston State. To learn more about Texas A&M softball, log on to AggieAthletics.com.
