MIAMI - The 11th-ranked Texas A&M men's tennis team opened the 2012 spring season individually with an appearance in the Gardnar Mulloy Miami Invitational in Coral Gables, Florida.
“I'm pleased with the overall quality of the matches here early in the year,” Aggie head coach Steve Denton said. “I'm pleased with the play of our younger guys and the doubles teams have been outstanding. Goo (Alexis Klegou) played an excellent match today against one of the top players in our league and in the country in Carvalho from Texas Tech.”
This invitational is not scored as a team event but as individuals and doubles. In the pre-season rankings, Illinois is ranked No. 17, Texas Tech is No. 22 and host Miami is No. 31. The singles players ranked include the country's No. 2 player in Dennis Nevolo from Illinois, No. 19 Alexis Klegou from Texas A&M, No. 23 Gonzalo Escobar from Texas Tech, No. 24 Roy Kalmanovich from Illinois, No. 73 Jeremy Efferding from Texas A&M and No. 104 Junior Ore from Texas A&M.
The Aggie doubles tandems have won six of seven matches thus far.
The teams will compete again on Saturday.
