Texas A&M sophomore Cammile Adams' pair of eye-catching wins at the Austin Grand Prix last weekend garnered Performance of the Week honors from Swimming World Magazine, the publication announced on Wednesday.
Adams, from Cypress, Texas, beat some of the world's best swimmers to earn gold medals in the 400-meter IM and the 200-meter butterfly at the 2012 Austin Grand Prix, which was the second stop on the USA Swimming Grand Prix Series.
On Saturday, Adams knocked off former world record holder Katie Hoff in the 400 IM with a time of 4:38.80, and then took down British Olympian Gemma Lowe for the win in the 200 fly in a pool record time of 2:06.76 on Sunday. Adams dropped nearly four seconds off her lifetime best swims in both her wins despite just emerging from the Aggies' winter training program.
"This was the hardest Christmas training I've done in my entire life, so I haven't really expected performances like this at all," Adams told USASwimming.org. "I'm really, really happy. It's definitely motivated me to train for Big 12's and bring that title home for the team, and then the NCAA Championships and (Olympic) Trials, for sure."
"She's a racer obviously and I thought she'd swim well but to drop big chunks of time off lifetime bests...no way I saw that coming," A&M head coach Steve Bultman said of Adam's 200 fly win to CollegeSwimming.com. "After seeing her drop that much off her 400 IM, I thought 'Okay, maybe she could go 2:08.' She had been stuck at 2:10 for a couple years, so I thought if she could get a lifetime best that would be awesome but 2:06? Holy smokes! One of the best things about this is there's no question she's just going to keep getting faster."
