No. 11 Aggies Open Spring Season in New Orleans

The 11th-ranked Texas A&M women's golf team opens its spring season on Sunday at the 2012 Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate Golf Championship in New Orleans, La.

COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The 11th-ranked Texas A&M women's golf team opens its spring season on Sunday at the 2012 Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate Golf Championship in New Orleans, La.

The 54-hole tournament is played at the par-72, 6,105-yard English Turn Golf & Country Club Sunday, Feb. 26 through Tuesday, Feb. 28. The first two days play begins with 8 a.m. tee times, while the final round is an 8 a.m. shotgun start.

The 15-team field features nine top 25 teams, including No. 2 Alabama, No. 3 Auburn, No. 4 USC, No. 11 Texas A&M, No. 13 Duke, No. 17 Colorado, No. 18 Florida, No. 19 Baylor and No. 20 Oregon. The rest of the field includes Tulsa, Florida State, Ole Miss, host Tulane, East Carolina and Kennesaw State.

Ryan Herrington of Golf Digest ranked the 2012 Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate Golf Championship as the fourth-best women's collegiate tournament for the spring season.

Representing Texas A&M will be Sarah Beth Davis, Susy Grunden, Mary Michael Maggio, Katerina Ruzickova and Patricia Garcia. Natalie Reeves will compete as an individual.

"We are very excited about competing this weekend," said A&M head coach Trelle McCombs. "We are getting started a little later than usual, but I feel very strongly that we are ready. This tournament has a great field and I look for us to be very competitive. Taking three juniors (Davis, Grunden and Maggio) that have a ton of experience, along with a great sophomore (Ruzickova) and a fiery freshman (Garcia), I expect us to do well."

The Aggies compete at the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate Golf Championship for the second year in-a-row. A&M finished eighth with a 9-over-par 885 (302-286-297) last spring and were led by Ruzickova's seventh-place finish at a 1-under 215 (73-71-72).

Live hole-by-hole scoring will be available on Golfstat.com. Also follow the Aggies with periodical updates on Twitter @Aggiewomensgolf.
