IRVING, Texas - Five Texas A&M women's basketball players earned recognition in the 2011-12 Phillips 66 All-Big 12 Conference Women's Basketball Awards as announced by the league on Monday.
Junior Kelsey Bone (Houston, Texas) was named the Big 12 Newcomer of the Year. Senior Tyra White (Kansas City, Mo.) was selected to the All-Big 12 First Team. Senior Sydney Carter (DeSoto, Texas) was voted to the All-Big 12 Second Team and the Big 12 All-Defensive Team, and both Bone and senior Adaora Elonu (Houston, Texas) were named All-Big 12 Honorable Mention. Alexia Standish (Colleyville, Texas) earned a spot on the Big 12 All-Freshman Team. The honors were voted on by the league's head coaches who are not allowed to vote for their own players.
Bone is in her first season with the Aggies after transferring from South Carolina. She is 17th in the conference in scoring (12.1), 10th in rebounding (6.9) and third in field goal percentage (.546). The 6-foor-4 center is second for A&M in points and the team's top rebounder while starting 26 of 29 games. Her field goal percentage is also 12th-best in the nation.
White is A&M's leading scorer and 12th in the league with 13.5 point per game. The six-foot guard has started all 29 games this season, adds 5.6 rebounds per game, and has reached double figures in 25 contests. The All-America candidate is in A&M's career top 10 in points, field goals made, 3-point field goal percentage and rebounds. This marks the second straight year she was an All-Big 12 First Team selection.
Carter is known for her tenacious defense, but she can also produce on the offensive end, averaging 11.0 points, 3.1 rebounds and 2.8 assist per game. She leads the team with an 81.4 free throw percentage (5th in the Big 12). The 5-foot-6 guard is in A&M's career top 10 in 3-point field goals made, assists, steals and owns the best career free throw percentage in program history. A three-year team captain, she is on the Big 12 All-Defensive Team for the second consecutive year and was awarded All-Big 12 for the first time after being a 2009 Big 12 All-Freshman Team honoree and a two-time All-Big 12 Honorable Mention.
Elonu, a 6-foot-1 forward and three-year team captain, earned her first All-Big 12 honor this season. The three-time Academic All-Big 12 selection is the Aggies' third-leading scorer (11.9) and second-leading rebounder (6.3). She is 15th in the conference in rebounding and 19th in scoring. She was a Lowe's Senior CLASS Award candidate and is listed in A&M's career top 10 in rebounds and blocked shots.
Earning her first career award, Standish averages 5.2 points and 2.3 assists per game in Big 12 play and has started 15 games this season. She is also shooting 40 percent (22-55) from beyond the arc in conference game. The 5-foot-9 point guard is only the fifth true freshman to start at the position in A&M head coach Gary Blair's nine seasons in Aggieland.
