COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Texas A&M softball junior Mel Dumezich was named the College Sports Madness Softball Big 12 Player of the Week, the publication announced today.
Dumezich (14-6) led the Aggies through a 2-1 upset weekend against No. 10 Missouri in A&M's first conference series of the season. The right hander defeated All-American Chelsea Thomas head-to-head twice, and hit a game-winning, two-RBI home run off of the ace for Friday's 2-1 win. Before Friday's game, Thomas had not allowed an earned run in 45.1 innings pitched and the Tigers were on a 17-game winning streak.
Dumezich was also outstanding from the circle in Sunday's game, throwing eight complete innings for the 1-0 shutout victory. She gave up just one hit and walked two batters while striking out six. The two victories give the No. 15 Aggies a 2-1 start in Big 12 play. Â
This is Dumezich's first weekly honor of the season. The Aggies return to the diamond tomorrow for a 6:30 p.m. game vs. No. 17 Baylor. To learn more about Texas A&M softball, log on to AggieAthletics.com or follow @AggieSoftball on Twitter.
