Urbina Leads A&M at USTA Collegiate Invitational
Nov 05, 2012 | Women's Tennis
Urbina went 3-0 in her pool, including an opening 6-4, 6-1 win over ninth-ranked Emina Bektas of Michigan. The victory equaled the highest ranked win of Urbina's career. She and the other seven pool winners advanced to the shootout, where Urbina fell in a close battle with Kyle McPhillips of UCLA, 11-9, in the quarterfinals.
Aggie senior Wen Sun tied for first in her pool after going 2-1, but despite having defeated UCLA's Chanelle Van Nguyen 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 in pool play, the Bruin advanced to the wildcard shootout based on tiebreaker procedures.
A&M freshman Anna Mamalat went 0-3 in singles against a strong singles field, and she and Urbina went 1-1 in doubles.
"The tournament was a fabulous experience for our ladies," A&M coach Howard Joffe said. "They did a wonderful job competing and embracing the challenge of competing indoors. Nazari was able to go undefeated in her group with a win over Bektas, which speaks to the great strides she has made since her layoff this past summer. They also got to participate in a community tennis clinic with young children that was presented by adidas, our sponsor."
The tournament concluded the fall season for the three Aggies. Three other teammates, senior Cristina Sanchez-Quintanar, junior Cristina Stancu and freshman Stefania Hristov, wrap up their fall campaign this weekend as they compete in the prestigious USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships, Nov. 8-11, at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y. Sanchez-Quintanar qualified in singles by winning the ITA Texas Regional, and Stancu and Hristov earned an automatic berth by winning the ITA Texas Regional doubles title.
