Aggies Finish Fifth at Burns Intercollegiate
Feb 17, 2012 | Men's Golf
The Aggies wrapped the tournament with a 7-under 281 on the Turtle Bay Resort's Palmer Course, giving them an 8-under 856 (288-287-281) for the week. A&M finished nine shots back of 10th-ranked California, which successfully defended its title with a 17-under 847.
"There were so many positives that came out of today," head coach J.T. Higgins said. "We got better as the tournament went on and had the low final round today. Our number one player struggled, and the guys picked up the slack for him. We got great performances from both our freshmen, Ty and Greg. We're just going to do nothing but get better from here."
No. 14 UNLV and No. 17 Duke tied for second at 10-under 854, with No. 25 New Mexico (-9) in fourth. SMU (-3) finished sixth, with Colorado State (+6), Nevada (+13), host Hawai'i (+17) and Arizona (+23) rounding out the top 10.
Hawai'i-Hilo (+28) finished 11th, followed by Denver (+35), BYU (+36), Fresno State (+38), Missouri (+49), UTEP (+49), Utah (+57) and BYU-Hawai'i (+74).
Redshirt freshman Greg Yates led A&M with a strong eighth-place finish, carding a 3-under 213 (76-68-69) for the week and finishing eight shots back of the champion, Duke's Julian Suri (205, -11).
Junior Cameron Peck (74-72-69) placed 13th with a 1-under 215, while true freshman Ty Dunlap was one shot back in 18th at even par (71-74-71=216). Seniors Geoff Shaw (71-76-72=219, +3) and Jordan Russell (72-73-77=222, +6) placed 31st and 41st, respectively. Junior Case Cochran, playing as an individual, shot a 78 on Friday and finished the week with a score of 242.
"I'm excited about this team and the things I think we're capable of this year," Higgins said. "We're young and we will have some tough days, but as long as we keep getting better our goal is to be a great team in May. That's a lot more important than February. I think we're on the right track and I'm looking forward to a great season."
Texas A&M returns to the links next weekend when the Aggies participate in the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate in Palm Desert, Calif.
