NEW ORLEANS – Updated national rankings in track and field following the NCAA preliminary rounds this past weekend have the Texas A&M men moving into the No. 1 position while the Aggie women remain locked in at No. 2 as both squads have the leading number of entries for the national championship meet.
Teams will trek to the northwest next week for the NCAA Championships at Hayward Field on the University of Oregon campus, which was the venue when the Aggies claimed a second pair of national championship team titles in 2010. Action will take place from June 5 to June 8 with live coverage available on ESPN3 (June 6) and ESPNU (June 7 & 8).
The A&M men moved into the No. 1 position nationally over Arkansas and Oregon while previous No. 1 Florida fell to No. 4. The rest of the top 10 schools include Florida State, LSU, USC, Texas, Nebraska and Virginia Tech.
The Aggie and Arkansas men share the lead in the number of entries they have going to Eugene with 20 apiece, followed by Texas (15), Florida (13), Oregon (12), LSU (12) and Florida State (10).
Texas A&M will have 10 entries in the men's sprints and hurdles, a pair in the middle distance, three in distance races, one relay, one jumper and three throwers.
In the women's rankings Kansas remains No. 1 with the Aggies No. 2 as Florida moved up from No. 5 to No. 3. The rest of the top 10 schools include LSU, Oregon, Arizona, Arkansas, Central Florida, Arizona State and Georgia.
Texas A&M women lead the field with 16 entries while Florida and Oregon have 15 apiece, followed by Kansas (13), Arizona (12), LSU (12), Texas (12), and Arkansas (11).
The breakdown of events for the Aggie women include eight entries in the sprints and hurdles, two relays, three jumpers, one thrower and two in the heptathlon.
