After winning her first four singles matches of the tournament in straight sets en route to the semifinals, the senior from Romania had to come from behind to defeat Simona Parajova of TCU, 1-6, 6-4, 6-1, today to advance. Stancu will close out the tournament with a meeting against Kiah Generette of Baylor in the finals, Monday at 10:30 a.m.
Before Stancu plays in the singles final, she will compete in the doubles championship with partner Stefania Hristov Monday at 9 a.m. The Aggie tandem defeated Victoria Kisialeva and Blair Shankle of Baylor, 8-4, in semifinal action today to advance to Monday's final, where they will face Breaunna Addison and Pippa Horn of Texas.
A&M's Paula Deheza and Mason Strickland were slated to take on Angeles De Los Rios and Astrid Gehre of UTA in the consolation semifinals today but withdrew with an injury.
The regional has featured some of the top players from across the state. The winners of the Texas Regional will advance to face other regional winners across the country at the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships, Nov. 7-10 in Flushing, N.Y. Stancu has already earned a berth in singles at the national indoor championships after reaching the semifinals at the prestigious Riviera/ITA All-American Championships earlier this month in California.
