COLLEGE STATION – The Texas A&M men's tennis team moved up two places in the latest ITA Rankings to No. 9, moving into the top 10 for the first time since the final rankings of the 2011 season. The Aggies have moved up in each of the first three ITA rankings this spring.
“Obviously one of our team goals is to be in the top ten this year,” head coach Steve Denton said. “This ranking will help in seeding for the ITA National Indoor that we are hosting in Houston in a couple weeks and eventually NCAA selections, but it is really early in the season and our focus is developing our player's skills and gaining confidence as a team.”
The Aggies improved to 4-0 on the young season with victories over UTSA and Lamar at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center Saturday afternoon. The Aggies failed to claim the doubles point against the Roadrunners but won all 12 sets in singles on their way to the 6-1 victory.
A&M is one of only 13 teams with both men's and women's programs currently ranked in the Top 25 and joins UCLA, Georgia and Southern Cal as the only schools with both teams ranked in the Top 10.
The SEC continues to dominate the ITA poll with 10 teams ranked in the Top 25. The ACC ranks second with four teams while the Big 12 and Pac 12 boast three teams apiece.
Texas A&M will be back in action again Sunday, Feb. 2, as it welcomes SMU and Nicholls State to the Mitchell Tennis Center at noon and 4 p.m., respectively. To learn more about the men's tennis team, visit AggieAthletics.com and follow @AggieMTEN on Twitter.
