In the Aggies' only match of the week, the Serbian recorded what is believed to be the highest ranked win by a freshman in Texas A&M singles history with a come-from-behind 0-6, 6-2, 1-0 (12-10) victory over fifth-ranked Hayley Carter of North Carolina. Her victory also propelled the No. 7 Aggies to the highest ranked team win in school history as A&M went on to defeat the No. 3 Tar Heels, 4-3, Tuesday in Chapel Hill, N.C.
With the Tar Heels leading 3-1 and needing only one point to clinch the overall team victory, the unranked Gavrilovska completed a second-set win against Carter to force a decisive third-set 10-point tiebreaker. Gavrilovska lost the first two points of the tiebreaker and later trailed by as much as 6-3 before making her comeback. She would fight off match points at 9-8 and 10-9 and tied the set for the fifth time at 10-10 before taking her first lead at 11-10. Gavrilovska then won the next point to complete the crucial win against Carter and put the surging Aggies within 3-2.
Gavrilovska, who receives her second consecutive freshman of the week citation, improved to 7-3 overall and 3-0 in dual matches. She and the Aggies (3-0) now head to the 16-team ITA National Indoor Championship, to be held Feb. 7-10, in Charlottesville, Va.
