GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The Texas A&M women's golf team turned in the second best round in the field to move up seven spots on the leaderboard finishing day two at the SunTrust Gator Invitational in a tie for third place. Freshman Marijosse Navarro took the day two lead and senior Katerina Ruzickova moves into top-5.
The Aggies (301-280) finished the second round at the par 70, 6,002 yard Mark Bostick Golf Course at even par, only leader Kent State (296-279) carded a better round than Texas A&M. Trailing Kent State on the leaderboard in the top-10 is Ohio State, Arizona, A&M, Virginia, Florida State, Miami, Oklahoma, Penn State and host Florida. Furman, UTSA, Old Dominion and South Florida complete the day two standings.
“The team had a meeting in the lobby last night and as a result of that had a total change in their approach today,” head coach Trelle McCombs said. “I am not completely sure what they talked about last night, but it worked. This team is very resilient and they want to win.”
Freshman Marijosse Navarro (71-69) continues to impress since joining the Aggies in January. The Mexico City native claimed the day two lead with a one-under performance to stand at even-par through two rounds. Navarro claimed the individual title at last Sunday's Battle at the Valley and finished 11th at the UC Irvine Invitational in her maroon and white debut.
“MJ played very steady golf all day long today,” McCombs said. “She never really let herself get into trouble and stayed very patient on the course.”
The best round of the day from an Aggie came from senior Katerina Ruzickova (76-67); the three- under round moved her from a tie for 47th into a tie for 5th. The trio of freshman Bianca Fabrizio (75-72, t28), senior Chelsea Mocio (79-72, t44) and freshman Andrea Jonama (81-72, t51) all finished two-over to help the Aggies climb the leaderboard.
“Kat had that look about her this morning and after John and I saw her play a couple holes we just got out of her way and let her do her thing,” McCombs added. “We noticed very early in the round that she was in complete control of her game. She is a special player and I knew after yesterday's round that she was not going to give up.”
The tournament concludes Sunday morning with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. The Aggies will tee off alongside golfers from Virginia and Florida State on holes four through seven.
