“Conditions were very tough early on with lots of wind and rain on and off,” Texas A&M head coach Trelle McCombs said. “We held it together finishing the last five holes strong. That was our saving grace today.”
No. 1 Southern Cal maintained a share shared the day two lead with Arizona State at two-over par. Trailing the Trojans and Sun Devils are Washington, Oklahoma, Northwestern, Michigan State, Texas A&M, Iowa State, Wisconsin and Wake Forest in the top-10. Completing the leaderboard is UC Davis, GRU Augusta, Clemson, Denver, Tennessee, New Mexico, Oregon, Notre Dame, Chattanooga, Portland State, San Diego State, Gonzaga, New Mexico State and Detroit.
Texas A&M freshman Marijosse Navarro eagled the final hole to lead the A&M effort at three-under par in a tie for 3rd place, after finishing the first day in a tie for second overall. Fellow freshman Andrea Jonama is in a tie for 25th at six-over par through two rounds. Completing the A&M lineup are senior Katerina Ruzickova tied for 45th, senior Chelsea Mocio tied for 87th and freshman Bianca Fabrizio tied for 117th.
“Tomorrow we will just ask the team be patient, have fun and give us your maximum effort,” McCombs said. “This is the same message we have stressed to the team all year long. We are excited to get out on the course tomorrow and play for a chance to go to nationals.”
The top eight teams and two individuals will advance from each regional to the NCAA Championship held May 20-23 at the Tulsa Country Club in Tulsa, Okla., hosted by the University of Tulsa. The 2014 championship will be the second for Tulsa Country Club, Duke claimed the 1999 National Championship in Tulsa.
The West Regional concludes tomorrow beginning at 9:30 a.m. (CT) as Texas A&M, Michigan State and Iowa State take to the course at hole number one. Stay tuned to AggieAthletics.com and follow @AggieWomensGolf on Twitter for coverage of Texas A&M women's golf.
