TULSA, Oklahoma – The Texas A&M women's golf team was one of the first teams on the course at the NCAA Championships at the Tulsa Country Club in Tulsa, Okla. posting a 25-over and tying for 16th the opening 18 holes of action. The field encountered windy conditions throughout the day, gusting over 30-mph at times, on the par 70, 6,194 yard championship course.
No. 7 Oklahoma took the day one lead at eight over par, with No. 2 UCLA just three strokes behind. Joining the Sooners and Bruins in the top-10 are No. 3 Duke, No. 1 Southern Cal, No. 5 Arizona State, No. 25 Cal, No. 11 Arizona, No. 6 Washington, No. 22 Ohio State and No. 4 Stanford. Completing the leaderboard are No. 4 South Carolina, No. 27 Mississippi State, No. 31 Tulane, No. 8 Vanderbilt, No. 18 Virginia, No. 10 Alabama, No. 21 Florida, No. 30 Texas A&M, No. 45 Campbell, No. 20 Michigan State, No. 15 Northwestern, No. 24 Iowa State, No. 17 NC State and No. 29 Kansas.
“The conditions were really tough out there today and I think the team is exhausted both physically and mentally,” Texas A&M head coach Trelle McCombs said. “We had to fight and keep in the round the whole day today, it was a real battle.”
Leading the charge for the maroon and white was All-SEC freshman team member Marijosse Navarro at three-over par in a tie for 22nd. The Mexico City native tallied 16 pars on the day including a par on each of her first nine holes on the day. Seniors Katerina Ruzickova and Natalie Reeves are tied for 70th at seven over after day one. Fellow senior Chelsea Mocio is just a stroke behind her classmates at eight over in a tie for 79th. Completing the A&M lineup is freshman Andrea Jonama at 10-over in a tie for 102nd.
“MJ was steady all day today and that is really all you can say about her round today,” McCombs said. “She probably is not really happy with her round today because she know she can play better, but she has to remember that on this course in these conditions par is a good score on every hole.
The championship resumes at 7:30 a.m. while the Aggies will return to the course at 11:50 a.m. alongside Tulane and Arizona golfers. Live scoring can be found at golfstat.com. Follow @AggieWomensGolf for updates during the round on Twitter.
