TULSA, Oklahoma – The Texas A&M women's golf team was 13 strokes better on the second day and remained in a tie for 16th place at the NCAA Championships taking place at the Tulsa Country Club in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Milder weather led to improved scores from most of the field on the par 70, 6,194 yard championship course.
“All-in-all the round today was just a better round for us,” Texas A&M head coach Trelle McCombs said. “Today's round was a complete team effort. It was an up and down round, but this team just kept fighting until the last golfer walked off the 18th green.”
No. 7 Oklahoma maintained control of the leaderboard through 36 holes at 15-over par. The Sooners are the only team in the field to score break 10-over each day. Following OU in the standings are No. 3 Duke, No. 5 Arizona State, No. 2 UCLA, No. 11 Arizona, No. 1 Southern Cal, No. 12 Stanford, No. 27 Mississippi State, No. 6 Washington and No. 20 Michigan State in the top-10. Completing the day two ledger are No. 10 Alabama, No. 22 Ohio State, No. 17 NC State, No. 8 Vanderbilt, No. 15 Northwestern, No. 21 Florida, No. 30 Texas A&M, No. 31 Tulane, No. 18 Virginia, No. 4 South Carolina, No. 25 Cal, No. 24 Iowa State, No. 29 Kansas and No. 45 Campbell.
“Andrea (Jonama) rebounded from a tough day yesterday to have a great round today,” McCombs said. “I was really impressed with her ability to get around the course today. AJ and Kat (Ruzickova) both showed up ready to play today and Marijosse backed up her play yesterday with yet another solid round.”
Senior Katerina Ruzickova and freshman Andrea Jonama led the charge for A&M, both shooting two-over par on Wednesday. Ruzickova improved 20 places in the standings into a tie for 50th, while Jonama jumped 28 places into a tie for 74th. Freshman Marijosse Navarro slid 10 spots into a tie for 32nd after shooting three-over par for the second straight day. Senior Natalie Reeves improved on her day one seven-over par performance by two strokes, moving up to a tie for 74th. Senior Chelsea Mocio completes the maroon and white contingent in the Sooner state in a tie for 108th.
“Natalie really impressed me today after having a tough time with the sixth hole,” McCombs said. “She settled in and posted a score that the team needed today. Chelsea had a tough go of it today, but she was the first player at the driving range after the round trying to fix a couple small things so she can come back and play well tomorrow.”
The third round of the NCAA Championship begins Thursday morning at 7:30 a.m. with the Aggies partnered with golfers from Florida and Tulane on hole 10 at 8:36 a.m. Live scoring can be found at golfstat.com. Follow @AggieWomensGolf for updates during the round on Twitter.
