In addition, Stancu, A&M's lone senior, is one of 15 players in the nation to be ranked in the final Top 25 in both singles and doubles. She and sophomore partner Stefania Hristov set an A&M record high in the final doubles rankings for a second consecutive season, ending the year with a No. 16 showing. The Romanian duo, which competed in the NCAA Doubles Championship for the second consecutive year, was No. 17 in last year's season-ending ranking.
Teammate Saska Gavrilovska tied her regular season high and set an A&M freshman record with a No. 47 final singles ranking, making her one of the top 10 highest ranked freshmen in the nation. The Serbia native, who became only the second freshman in Texas A&M history to compete in the NCAA Singles Championship, also is the top-ranked freshman in the powerful Southeastern Conference.
Gavrilovska is No. 84 in the final doubles rankings with sophomore Ines Deheza, who finished No. 92 in singles. Freshman Rutuja Bhosale and sophomore Anna Mamalat also represent A&M in the final doubles rankings, coming in at No. 81.
A&M swept the ITA's final Texas Region rankings, also released today. The Aggies are the No. 1-ranked team in Texas for the second consecutive year and for the fourth time since the region rankings began in 1989. Stancu, the ITA Texas Region Senior Player of the Year, is the top-ranked player in singles and also staked claim to the No. 1 spot in doubles with Hristov. It is the first time A&M has finished No. 1 in the region doubles rankings, and it marks the fourth time the program has received top billing in singles (2014, 2013, 2012 and 2004).
Gavrilovska, the ITA Texas Region Rookie Player of the Year, is No. 4 in singles, making her the highest ranked freshman in the region. Deheza and Mamalat also finished in the top 20 in the region at No. 9 and 18, respectively.
Deheza and Gavrilovska are No. 6 in the region's final doubles ratings, and Bhosale and Mamalat are No. 8.
Texas A&M was No. 9 in the final ITA team rankings, released last week. It is the second consecutive year and the second time in program history the Aggies finished in the top 10. Under the direction of third-year head coach Howard Joffe and associate head coach Mark Weaver, the Aggies went 21-7 overall in 2014. It is the second consecutive year and the eighth time overall A&M has posted 20 or more victories in a season.
The Aggies made a 15th consecutive and 20th overall appearance in the NCAA tournament and were seeded No. 10 in the 64-team field. They advanced to the NCAA Championship round of 16 for the second consecutive year and the third time in program history before falling to eventual runner-up North Carolina, which fell to UCLA in the national championship match and placed No. 3 in the final ranking.
