COLLEGE STATION, Texas—The Texas A&M athletics program finished in 10th place in the 2013-14 Division I Learfield Sports Directors' Cup final rankings with a total of 1022 points. The Aggies have finished in the Top 10 the past five years in the final year-end rankings. (6th in 2009-10, 8th in 2010-11, 9th in 2011-12, 5th in 2012-13 and 10th in 2013-14.)
“I am very proud of the overall success and efforts of our student-athletes and coaches,” Texas A&M Director of Athletics Eric Hyman said. “Nine of our teams finished in the Top 10 led by the national championship in women's outdoor track and field.”
“I am equally proud of the efforts made by our programs in the classrooms and in the community,” Hyman explained. “Winning on the various fields of play and winning in the classrooms are not mutually exclusive.”
The final rankings included points for baseball and coach Rob Childress with Texas A&M reaching the NCAA Regional Championship game to finish 17th and score 50 additional points.
Texas A&M track and field coach Pat Henry led his women's team to the national championship to claim 100 points while the men's outdoor track and field squad finished third and picked up an additional 85 points.
The national championship was the fourth for the women's outdoor track and field program since 2009. Both the men's and women's outdoor track and field programs have won four NCAA team titles each over the past six seasons. Coach Henry has tallied 35 career NCAA Championship crowns with 16 coming at the NCAA Outdoor meet.
Texas A&M scored 510 points in the spring and scored 314 points in the winter standings to go with 198 points in the fall.
The Aggies were the second ranked SEC squad behind Florida's second-place finish. Six SEC programs were ranked in the country's Top 25 and all 14 schools were in the Top 54 in the land.
The Learfield Sports Directors' Cup takes into consideration the top 10 female sports and the top 10 male sports at each institution. In Texas A&M's case, the school sponsors 20 intercollegiate sports, 11 female and nine male.
